On August 12, 2006, Extreme Control headed up to the bustling metropolis of Cancun to participate in the biggest beach party in the world. The folks at Lomas Travel invited us to the festivities so that we could help promote their company and our school. It was a classic Caribbean day with the sun shining, the sea glowing and music playing. As we arrived in a somewhat disheveled Hotel Zone we walked over a small hill to find the most stunning shades of blue I think I have ever seen. The ocean was surely a sight to see that day. Unfortunately, while the ocean was sitting there looking beautiful the wind was sitting as well….very still. Not very good for our prospects of doing an exciting kiteboarding demo for the crowd. We still decided to try our best and at least get some of our trainer kites flying. We set up a small display and launched a couple of trainers. The announcer was great in getting the people interested if only the wind would have cooperated a little more. After a little flying time the heat began to beat down a bit harder in mid afternoon. We decided to take a break and find some relief in the shade. The area was lined with decorative flags that we were watching intently for any sign of the wind increasing. We figured as soon as we saw the littler ones moving we would be up and flying with our 16’s. The wind started picking up slightly in the afternoon and Marco Cristofanelli, David Furchtgott and Gerardo all took their turns flying the Waroo 16 to at least give the crowd a taste. The wind was quite light but the three managed to get a couple good rides in while the rest of us got the people involved trying out the trainer kites. The volunteers felt the power of our 3 meters kites and seemed quite impressed. Overall, we had a good turn out and we were able to do a bit of a demo for the party. At the end of the day, we packed up our gear and hiked back to the car to survive our ride back to the quiet town of Tulum. We had a nice day out in the city. Thanks to everyone at Lomas Travel for inviting us and we hope to continue doing promotional events in the future. We’ll keep you posted. |
